What You Need to Know About Tranche 2

Today, on July 1, 2026, Australia implements the second tranche of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Act. This change expands the obligations set by AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) to include more businesses.

Previously, only financial institutions and casinos were subject to these regulations. Now, lawyers, accountants, conveyancers, and real estate agents are also classified as "designated services." This means we all have a role to play in preventing financial crime.

AUSTRAC explains that these changes aim to close loopholes that criminals have exploited for years. They are responding to the increasing sophistication of financial crimes.

As a conveyancer, I want to assure you that we may ask more personal questions before processing property title transfers. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

The Impact of Financial Crime

It's important to understand the gravity of financial crime in Australia. Every day, financial crimes occur, leading to losses that can reach up to $82 billion annually. Much of the money laundered in the country is linked to serious crimes such as illegal tobacco trading, environmental destruction, corruption, child exploitation, and human trafficking.
